Te Kareti O Ngakau Tapu – Hearts and Minds in Harmony
Sacred Heart College, Napier on its present site in Convent Road was founded by The Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. In 1867 the school for ‘Young Ladies’ that would eventually become known as Sacred Heart College was blessed and opened. It was the first Catholic school and hostel established by the Sisters in New Zealand.
Sacred Heart College is under the patronage of the Sacred Heart with its motto “Virtue and Knowledge”. The College offers an education that is integrated in the Catholic Faith by prayer, worship and religious education.
Because faith is at the heart of all aspects of College life an undertaking is required by parents at enrolment that their daughter will participate in Religious Education instruction and worship.
Through the general College programme and in its religious instruction and observances, students are able to live the values of Jesus Christ as expressed in the Gospels and in the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. These values are reflected in the daily life of the College. A missionary spirit is encouraged amongst the students through the Religious Education classes and various service and fundraising activities.
Learning is embedded in strong relationships and anchored in high expectations. Small class sizes allow for high levels of support and teacher interaction.
Many students come to us with sporting aspirations and talents. Our aim is to acknowledge, foster and develop these by encouraging participation as well as excellence.
Many of our teams and athletes excel at provincial and national level. Personal fitness and healthy activity are encouraged, and an interest in leisure activities is fostered for the years beyond school.
Sacred Heart College is able to offer a extensive range of co-curricular activities. These activities complement the academic achievement of students and assist in producing well-rounded young women. Some class’ include;
