Ad Astra Per Aspera – to the Stars Through Endeavour
Founded in 1914, St Matthew’s is an integrated day and boarding school for girls from Year 7 to Year 13. We are located in the rural town of Masterton in the North Island of New Zealand.
St Matthew’s is part of the Trinity family of schools which includes Hadlow Preparatory School for boys and girls from pre school to Year 8, St Matthew’s for girls and Rathkeale College for boys from Year 9 to Year 13. Our senior girls and boys join together for co-education at the Senior College on the Rathkeale campus in Years 12 and 13.
At St Matthew’s we focus on the needs of the individual, encouraging each girl to reach her potential in all aspects of school life , and to embody the spirit of our school motto “ad astra per aspera” (to the stars through endeavour).
“I am there for our international students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I provide support for the girls while they are studying in New Zealand and help them to adjust to New Zealand life. I aim to make their stay as enjoyable as possible so that they leave us with great memories of a happy time in their lives.” – Jayne (International Student Coordinator)
St Matthew’s offers a well-established, safe, friendly and caring environment for students from overseas.
A St Matthew’s girl lives by Christian values of service, love and respect. A St Matthew’s education provides time and space to practice this.
We have a proud tradition of educating and caring for girls from all countries all over the world including Thailand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China, USA, Denmark and Germany.
International students all live in our on-site school boarding houses with fellow students from New Zealand. Boarding is a key part of school life at St Matthew’s.
Academic excellence is a focus with almost all girls continuing on to tertiary education. Our strong and personalised ESOL programme supports students through the national NCEA syllabus. It also offers support for students who want to sit external examinations such as IELTS and SAT.
The College has a strong sporting tradition and all students are encouraged to participate in sports. Many of our teachers and parents put a great deal of time and effort into sport. As a result of this, we are represented in most sports and have several champion teams.
Students are expected to play for the school while they are at College. Parents are urged to support school teams on Saturdays and whenever inter-school games are played.
