Tour Itinerary

We can arrange students from out of town staying at the Active Planet Headquarters in Pukekohe the night before tour to be in Auckland for the start of the tour.

We leave Auckland at 8am.

We will then drive to Matamata ( 2 hour drive ) in the Waikato region.

Matamata township has a Hobbiton style information centre an a few good photo opportunities. We will stop here to stretch our legs and it is a chance to get some snacks for the tour.

At the Hobbiton site, you will board a special movie set bus with a Hobbiton guide who will provide awesome history and stories about the movie series. The bus will take you the famous ” Shire ” movie set and then return you to the main entrance . The guided tour will take about 2 hours. You will walk around the film set and the tour includes a stop for refreshments at the “Green Dragon” onsite “Hobbit pub”.

The guides are always willing to answer any questions you may have about the famous movie trilogies.

Lord of the Rings

– The Fellowship of the Ring
– The Two Towers
– The Return of the King

The Hobbit

– An Unexpected Journey
– The Desolation of Smaug
– The Battle of the Five Armies

Lunch in Matamata.

On the journey home, we will make a photo stop at Lake Karapiro. Lake Karapiro is an artificial reservoir lake on the Waikato River. The lake was formed in 1947 by damming the Waikato River to store water for the 96-megawatt Karapiro hydroelectric power station.

An International Rowing Federation inspection panel visited Lake Karapiro in March 2006 and said in its report that it was one of the fairest courses in the world they had seen and that the lake was one of the most picturesque in the world. It is the primary venue for the New Zealand Rowing Nationals and has also been host the World Rowing Championships.

Our last stop for the day will be the spectacular Hunua Falls. Her you will have the opportunity to walk to the falls lookout and have a swim in the refreshing waterhole below the falls.

Arrive in Auckland at around 7 pm.
