Tour Itinerary

A lot of students will need accommodation in Auckland the night before to allow an early start on day one. Our team will communicate with you to recommend the best transport times and stay at the Active Planet Headquarters. A farmstay in the south of Auckland.

Students studying in Whangarei / Kerikeri can be picked up on our way through (Day 1)

We depart Auckland at 9am, from arranged pick up points and make our way North. We have a scenic stop at the Whangarei falls for lunch. After we have finished taking photos from the bottom of the falls we continue our journey. Kawiti Caves gives a cultural insight to the history of the local ‘Iwi’ and a sparking display from the glow worms scattered across the cave ceiling. A bathroom stop in Kawakawa to see the world famous Hundertwasser toilets, designed by the renowned Austrian artist / architect ‘Friedensreich Hundertwasser’.

It’s time to take a leap of faith with Bay of Islands Skydive, the highest jump in New Zealand!!!

That in the landscape as we drive further North to Tokerau Beach, located on the Karikari Peninsula. We arrive to our beach front accommodation on a quiet, endless sandy beach. Some games, fishing, kayaking and a swim to enjoy the beach.

Some night games, stargazing and singing to get to know one another.

Spectacular early morning sunrise at Cape Reinga, the most northern point of New Zealand where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean collide. The lighthouse and the view will take your breath away. This area has a very strong cultural history with the Maori people.

We arrive to the huge Te Paki Mountain Dunes for a picnic breakfast, the day has just begun. These sand dunes are immense and from the top the thought of sliding down one is very intimidating. No time to worry about the size of them and how steep they are, we are here to body board down them at high speed!!!

A stop at Ka Uri Unearthed where you will learn a bit about the Giant Guardians of the forest, the Kauri trees were true behemoths. These ancient trees were excellent for building and milled by the early settler, especially for ship masts. The Kauri gum is also a valuable, sort after item.

We stop at an amazing white beach (Rarawa Beach). The amazing “silicate” or white sandy beach, it is an ideal opportunity to take incredible video and photo footage. Another beach… 90 Mile Beach will be our next stop. The worlds only Highway Beach, under highway and road law. We stop here so you can feel the size of the beach and the power of the Tasman Sea.

If time permits we may have the opportunity to go for a snorkel at Matai Bay, not far from our accommodation.

Night swim beneath the stars.

Spectacular early morning sunrise and Breakfast.

Puketi Kauri forest is our first stop as we head back south to have a look at these 800 year old majestic trees. Visit Kerikeri to see the Old Stone Store and visit Charlies Rock, a waterfall enjoyed by all the local youths during the summer period. Leap from the rocks next to the waterfall into the cool water.

We arrive in Paihia for lunch and get ready for the optional Fullers “Hole in the Rock” cruise and dolphin swim. Waitangi Treaty House grounds to visit, (The Waitangi Treaty House is a very special New Zealand landmark. This important historical site was used to deliver the colonization agreement between Maori and migrant European settlers).

Evening fun in Paihia, shopping, walk the promenade and beach front, perhaps hire a kayak and paddle to one of the safe sheltered islands.

Head South to Whangarei hunting the waves for surfing on one of the hundreds of beaches in the area. More water / beach activities and sightseeing (dependent on surf location). Enjoy Lunch on the beach.

An afternoon Exploring beaches such as; Mermaid Pools, Matapouri, Tutukaka, Pataua, Oceans Beach or even climb the famous Mt Manaia for a spectacular view of Whangarei Harbour.

From Paihia, we head through to Whangarei and then along the coast into Waipu village, then amazing Langs Beach. North of Auckland be admire Orewa, then return into central Auckland.

Often there is time to explore the Viaduct Harbour and Skytower.

For Northland / Cape Reinga / Bay of Islands is now complete, and some students may depart from Auckland city.

We head to Mission Bay, then Mount Wellington, ending back at Active Planet farm for the night. To check on the animals..!

We wake-up on the farm, and head off to rugged Coromandel. A lot of gold remains in the high hills, and we drive across the rugged bush road to Tairua, then Hahei. Famous in the movie scene of Narnia and other films, Cathedral Cove is beautiful. Depending on a low tide time, we then go to Hot Water Beach to dig a natural sea-side hot water pool in the sand and bathe.. even if it  is 1am in the morning !

From Coromandel, everyone is excited about going to Hobbiton, The Shire is super popular and really worth seeing. The guided tour by Hobbiton staff, is 2 hours of great information and fun.  We head into Rotorua. Lot’s of activity options here: Animal encounter, jetboat, kiwi encounter, trout farm, gondola luge, awesome white water rafting and more.

We do visit local garden with natural thermal steam and mud pools. We also respectfully walk through Ohinemutu Marae. Opportunity to choose to see a brilliant Maori Cultural show at Mitai Village, with wonderful song, food and historical story telling. The life and earth care lessons from Maoridom are just as relevant today as they were long ago.

We may go to Twin Streams for a thermal river bathe at night time.

Today is used to complete many of the activities mentioned the day before when we arrive into Rotorua. This day will be filled with these popular activities and other ideas students may have…  horse riding, zorb, tree walking… refer to our ” Tour Activities ” drop down for other options.

We have not finished with Rotorua yet..!

After breakfast, we arrive at Wai O Tapu thermal park. This is a very special natural wonder, unique to Earth. The steam, the mud vent holes, the bright coloured mineral pools and then a special treat. You will see a hot water geyser eruption.

After Wai O Tapu, we go to Aratiatia dam release, to see a controlled dam storage water release. The Waikato river flows from Lake Taupo close to Auckland and along the way, many dams are used to generate clean hydo-electric power to supply N.Z.

A photo-stop at Huka Falls to see the thundering Waikato River as it powers through a small rock space. Then into Taupo township. Various activity options here including, awesome super fast Jetboating, sky-dive, brilliant bungy jump, golf ball hole-in-one onto lake island. Time for shopping and walk around.

After dinner, we will walk to a local thermal stream that has a warm waterfall as it flows into the mighty Waikato River. We bathe under the stars.

Taupo calling and nothing will wake you up, quite like, a Bungy Jump or Jet-boat ride… !

The list of activity options, like Rotorua, are completed on this day for time we have available and depending on what cool free / sightseeing and ” optional ” things you choose. Taupo is often compared to ” Queenstown ” in the South Island, so many exciting adventures, all in a special beautiful location.

Big day today, up early and ( if students want to visit ) Waitomo Glowworm Caves and maybe Black-Water RaftingWe often find students prefer Kawiti Caves in Northland and do not want to see more glowing worms…

So we head to Raglan, world famous for surfing. So options for surf lessons or horse riding, or like me, jump of the bridge for free !

Really nice country-side, rolling green hills and the day ends with a well earned hot shower !

We head to Active Planet farm for the night and depending on time, grab food along the way, or have another ” kiwi classic cook-up ”
